The National Conference (NC) party emerges victorious in Kashmir elections
Following the revocation of its semi-autonomous status in 2019, Kashmir held elections where the NC secured 42 seats, while the ruling BJP got 29 and the Congress Party, in alliance with NC, won 6 seats. NC leader Omar Abdullah expressed gratitude for the support, pledging to prove their worth. His father, Farooq Abdullah, emphasized running the region without oppressive rule.
The election results reflect a rejection of the 2019 decision by Prime Minister Modi’s government to strip Kashmir of its special status. Amid celebrations by NC supporters, the region, now under tight control by India, witnessed a 35-year conflict, highlighting the political tensions.
Despite India’s attempt to display democratic processes, the region’s limited legislative powers point to continued central authority from New Delhi. The symbolic victory for NC signifies Kashmir’s defiance against external control, with the political landscape remaining contentious.
