Morocco has announced its readiness to take back irregular migrants who are Moroccan nationals living in Europe, shifting the blame onto host countries for delays in repatriation. This response comes after a Moroccan irregular migrant was arrested in France for the suspected murder of a French student. Despite being ordered for deportation due to a previous rape conviction, the delay was attributed to Rabat’s failure to issue a laissez-passer document.
Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita emphasized Morocco’s willingness to repatriate certified irregular migrants who originated from Moroccan territory, signaling a proactive stance. This announcement was accompanied by a challenge to host countries to reciprocate the readiness for cooperation.
Amidst the backdrop of the recent murder case, France has also vowed to strengthen its migration policy, with Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau pledging to introduce new regulations to safeguard French interests. The incident has underscored the complex dynamics of irregular migration and the interplay between countries in managing such challenges.
