French authorities ordered Omar bin Laden, the son of slain al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, to leave the country over social media posts, announced France’s interior minister on Tuesday, October 8.
Omar bin Laden lived in France’s Normandy region but was forced to leave in October 2023 after his residency papers were revoked, with a two-year ban on returning, due to social media posts promoting terrorism.
Omar bin Laden, 43, has lived in various countries before settling in France in 2016 as a painter. His marriage to a British woman caused media attention, and he was also rejected from living in the UK.
Despite the controversy, France’s Interior Minister is firm on immigration policies, reflecting a shift in the government’s stance. Osama bin Laden, father of Omar, was killed by US forces in 2011.
