Medical professionals praise legislators’ push to reassess medicare pricing list

The Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners has praised the House of Representatives for initiating a review of the price list for medicine and Medicare under the National Health Insurance Scheme. The association expressed optimism that this decision will benefit Nigerians once the drug pricing undergoes a much-needed revision.

The House of Representatives recently called for its relevant committees to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Authority to conduct a thorough review of the price list for medicine and Medicare within the health insurance scheme. This resolution stemmed from a motion presented by a member representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, Enugu State, stressing the urgent need for the price list review due to the prevailing economic conditions in the country.

The President of the ANPMP, Dr. Kayode Adesola, lauded the representatives for their sensitivity towards the welfare of Nigerians, especially concerning access to affordable medications. He emphasized the importance of equitable funding for a well-managed Health Insurance Scheme to ensure optimal healthcare for all citizens.

The intervention of the House of Representatives serves as a catalyst for ongoing efforts to improve the healthcare system in Nigeria, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by both providers and patients. The commitment to review the pricing structure is a step towards achieving quality healthcare delivery and ensuring the well-being of all Nigerians.
