Malawi Urged to Rethink Ties with Israel Amid Gaza Conflict
President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, faced criticism from civil society groups in the country over its diplomatic and economic relations with Israel, amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The Malawi Palestine Solidarity Movement (MPSM) demanded the government to withdraw its support for Israel, citing the violation of core values of peace and humanity.
One year after the war on Gaza began, the MPSM reiterated its stance, calling for an end to all ties with Israel. The national coordinator of the group, Assaboni Phiri, highlighted the government’s contradictory support and urged for a policy change in alignment with the nation’s principles of peace.
Despite concerns raised by opposition parties and human rights organizations, the government defended its decision to send workers to Israel, citing job creation and youth empowerment. The longstanding relationship between Malawi and Israel dates back to the 1960s, with mutual exchanges in healthcare and agriculture.
