Kenyan lawmakers approve impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of Kenya faces impeachment for abuse of office, corruption, insubordination, and divisive politics.

Lawmakers in Kenya voted to impeach Gachagua, with 281 members supporting the motion. Gachagua denies the charges and vows to fight. If the Senate also approves the impeachment, he would be the first deputy president removed from office this way since Kenya’s 2010 constitution.

Gachagua has filed a court petition to halt the proceedings initiated by allies of President William Ruto. The deputy president’s relationship with Ruto has been strained, leading to his impeachment. Ruto recently reshuffled his cabinet after protests against tax increases. Gachagua’s controversial comments and perceived role in the protests have alienated him from Ruto’s coalition.
