India-occupied Kashmir (IOK) recently held its first government elections since being brought under direct control by New Delhi. Following the cancellation of Kashmir’s partial autonomy in 2019, the region faced mass arrests and a communications blackout. The elections also saw Congress making gains in Haryana, where wrestler Vinesh Phogat stood as a candidate. The BJP, however, emerged victorious in sectors of Haryana and Kashmir. The outcomes in these regions are crucial for BJP and Congress, providing insights ahead of future provincial elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
