MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The Cuban government has officially requested to join the BRICS bloc as a partner country in a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, given that Moscow currently chairs the association, announced Carlos Pereira, the director general of bilateral affairs of the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
“Cuba has submitted an official request to become a ‘partner country’ in BRICS by sending a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the interim chairman of the organization. BRICS plays a crucial role in global geopolitics, representing hope for the Global South,” Pereira stated.
Russian Ambassador to Cuba, Viktor Koronelli, mentioned that Moscow expects a Cuban delegation at the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, and Cuba’s president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, has received an invitation from Putin.
BRICS, established in 2006, includes members like Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, recently expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Russia’s presidency focuses on promoting multilateralism for global development and security, with over 200 events planned. The summit will take place in Kazan from October 22-24.
