Brics: High hopes dashed as unity, effectiveness falter

In the Global South, Brics is often viewed as an alternative to the Western-dominated world order. Despite this perception, the group’s leading members often hold conflicting views on key geopolitical issues, and Brics remains largely ineffective compared to Western institutions.

Brics, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is set to convene for its annual summit in Kazan, Russia. The event presents an opportunity for Russian President Vladimir Putin to showcase his global connections, but raises questions about the organization’s impact.

Perceived as a force for change by some and a tool for Moscow and Beijing by others, Brics struggles to make significant contributions on the world stage. Critics liken Brics meetings to casual discussions at a convenience store, with little tangible impact on global affairs.

While the group’s rhetoric of solidarity and mutual respect appeals to nations seeking a shift from Western dominance, Brics’ influence remains limited in shaping global developments.
