Azerbaijan’s Refusal to Sign Interim Peace Agreement with Armenia Prolongs Conflict, Says Spanish Legislator

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8, ARMENPRESS. Spanish legislator Jon Iñarritu has criticized Azerbaijan’s refusal to sign an interim peace agreement with Armenia until all outstanding issues are resolved. According to Iñarritu, this decision only prolongs the peace process and increases uncertainty, showing Baku’s intention to push for further concessions from Armenia.

PM Nikol Pashinyan had proposed signing the agreed-upon articles of the peace treaty and handling outstanding issues later, but Azerbaijan rejected the offer. Iñarritu warned that even if Azerbaijan were to sign an agreement, it may not adhere to it, as seen in previous violations.

Iñarritu highlighted the serious consequences of Azerbaijan’s refusal to advance a partial agreement, stating that it raises the risk of renewed clashes or border incidents. He emphasized the difference in values between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with Armenia seeking peaceful resolutions while Azerbaijan leans towards authoritarian tactics.

This reluctance to commit to partial agreements may hinder progress towards lasting peace, as Azerbaijan prioritizes leverage over stability, according to Iñarritu.
