Autonomy Granted to Local Governments in Akwa Ibom State
Recently, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State emphasized that the autonomy granted to local governments in the state does not mean that council chairmen are operating separately from the state government. Speaking at the inauguration of the thirty-one local government chairmen, Eno cautioned them against misusing the concept of autonomy, stating that shared responsibilities between the local and state levels must be carefully considered.
While congratulating the chairmen on their election victory, the governor reiterated the importance of them residing in their respective council areas as chief security officers. Eno also expressed gratitude towards Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, Chairman of AKISIEC, for conducting a fair and credible election.
He reminded the chairmen that they are integral parts of the government machinery and should align their actions with the state’s governance blueprint, the ARISE Agenda. Eno urged them to prioritize the needs of their communities and work towards fulfilling them.
