As the one-year mark of Israel’s devastating war on Gaza approaches, the UN Human Rights Office raises serious concerns about the widespread non-compliance with international humanitarian law and the lack of accountability for the atrocities committed.
The conflict began with an attack by Hamas on Israel in October 7, 2023, resulting in a devastating offensive by Israel on the Gaza Strip. Since then, nearly 42,000 people have died, with most of Gaza’s population displaced and the region left in ruins, facing hunger and diseases.
Reflecting on the ongoing violations, UN spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani highlighted the serious breaches of international humanitarian law, emphasizing the protection of civilians as a critical issue. The prevalent impunity in the region has only fueled further violence and conflict.
Despite some steps towards accountability, the lack of justice and the ongoing violations underscore the urgent need for stronger enforcement of international law and a commitment to upholding human rights in the region to pave the way for a sustainable peace.
