Two Chinese nationals killed in Pakistani road explosion

Security officials work on the site of an explosion that caused injures and destroyed vehicles outside the Karachi airport, Pakistan, Monday, Oct. 7, 2024.

A blast near the Karachi airport in Pakistan claimed the lives of two Chinese nationals, according to the Chinese embassy on Monday. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, was initially attributed to a tanker explosion on the airport motorway.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant group, later claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it targeted a convoy of Chinese engineers and investors. The attack resulted in casualties among Chinese and Pakistani citizens.

The BLA has been advocating for autonomy in Balochistan province, often targeting Chinese nationals. The embassy urged authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and projects in the region.

Flights from Karachi continue as usual, as investigations into the incident are ongoing. The incident underscores the challenges faced by foreign investors and citizens in conflict-prone regions.
