The number of “port visas” issued to foreigners bound for China has greatly increased this year, especially during the National Day holiday period, leading to a surge in foreign arrivals.
China issued 846,000 of these special visas in the first seven months of 2024, marking an impressive 183 per cent increase from the previous year.
Port visas simplify the entry process for tourists, making China more accessible and appealing for foreign travelers, according to hospitality expert Chen Yong.
These visas provide a convenient alternative to traditional visa applications, benefitting travelers without fixed plans or immediate access to embassies.
The increase in foreign arrivals in 2024 has not only boosted the tourism industry, but also provided support for various sectors struggling in the domestic market.
