Unsung Heroes: The ZAKA Volunteers at Shura IDF Camp
Around 200 ZAKA volunteers selflessly dedicated their time and effort at the Shura IDF camp in Ramla, where they handled the transfer and identification of approximately 1,200 bodies following a tragic event on October 7. Among them was Eli Turjeman, who recounted his harrowing experience of dealing with the aftermath of the massacre.
Turjeman described the scene as unlike anything he had ever witnessed before, with bodies bound, burned, and dismembered, including children. The emotional toll was immense, but the volunteers persevered to provide closure for the families of the victims.
Despite the challenges, Turjeman continued his volunteer work at the National Center of Forensic Medicine, emphasizing the importance of their mission in serving their country. Their commitment to duty, even at personal sacrifice, reflects the dedication and resilience of these unsung heroes.
As Turjeman aptly puts it, “There are soldiers on the battlefield, doctors in hospitals, and then there’s us. Everyone does their part. Not everyone can handle this.” Their bravery and selflessness deserve recognition and gratitude.
