Paes was reelected Sunday but Sao Paulo will have to wait until the Oct. 27 runoff

Eduardo Paes secured his fourth term as mayor of Rio de Janeiro, defeating candidates supported by President Bolsonaro in a major electoral victory for President Lula. Paes thanked Lula and Rio Governor Cláudio Castro for his win, emphasizing unity.

Meanwhile, runoff elections are expected in several cities, including Sao Paulo, where Mayor Ricardo Nunes faces a challenge from Federal Congressman Guilherme Boulos. Incumbent Mayor Sebastião Melo in Porto Alegre is also headed for a runoff against Federal Congresswoman Maria do Rosário.

Despite the anticipation of runoff elections in multiple cities, fifty cities are set for runoffs to determine their next mayors, highlighting the competitive landscape of Brazil’s municipal elections.
