Security and law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring a nationwide strike sparked by “anger regarding prevailing economic crises.” The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) initiated marches in all nine provinces on Monday to address various grievances, including crime, corruption, high interest rates, soaring unemployment, poverty, and inequality.
Cosatu emphasized the urgency of addressing the country’s unemployment crisis, stating that 11.3 million people are currently without jobs. Despite this staggering figure, the union remains determined to advocate for opportunities for all job seekers.
The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NatJoints) has mobilized resources to ensure the safety of striking workers and to maintain order during the protest. They have warned against any form of lawlessness, road blockages, or disruptions.
