North Korea tightens control on vice in spas & salons

North Korean authorities are cracking down on immoral activities in public service facilities like beauty salons and bathhouses. A directive issued by the Cabinet’s Public Service Bureau aims to eliminate debauchery, with violators facing labor re-education or banishment to rural areas.

The order applies to both state-run and privately operated facilities, as North Korea increasingly allows private businesses to operate and collect taxes. Private establishments are preferred by North Koreans for their better services, but this preference has led to an increase in illicit activities.

Wealthy patrons often expect sexual services along with massages at bathhouses, which has become normalized. Despite government warnings, operators continue such practices for profit and can often avoid punishment through bribery.

The Daily NK’s sources in North Korea report on these developments, highlighting the challenges of regulating these facilities. For more information or to share your thoughts on this issue, contact dailynkenglish@uni-media.net. Stay informed and stay engaged.
