Russia recently arrested a medic on charges of “Satanism” and “promoting same-sex relationships” in a crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights in the name of “traditional family values.” This action comes in the wake of increased hostility towards LGBTQ+ individuals, especially since Russia’s involvement in Ukraine in 2022.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) detained the head of a medical institution in Ulyanovsk region, accusing him of “devil worshipping” and advocating for same-sex relations among his subordinates as a part of satanic rituals. The Orthodox Church’s influence has grown significantly, leading to a more conservative social climate in Russia.
The FSB stated that the medic deceived citizens by suggesting that adopting the cult would bring financial success and career advancement. A criminal case has been initiated for coercion into sexual activities and involvement in an extremist group. Russia’s severe anti-LGBT stance was further reinforced by the banning of the “international LGBT movement” last year, placing it at the bottom of European rankings for LGBTQ+ rights.
