Maldives president visits India to mend fragile ties

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu received a grand welcome on his first state visit to India, signaling a new beginning in relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the visit as a “new chapter” to reset troubled ties, as Muizzu, who had previously shown pro-China leanings, sought to improve relations with India.

During the visit, India offered financial assistance to help strengthen the Maldives’ struggling economy. Discussions between Muizzu and Modi ranged from energy and trade to defense cooperation, with India also announcing plans to develop infrastructure in the Maldives, including a commercial port and a potential free trade agreement.

Muizzu expressed gratitude for India’s support and assured that Maldives would prioritize its ties with India and not compromise regional security. The visit comes amid heightened concerns about China’s increasing presence in the region, with India traditionally viewing the Maldives as within its sphere of influence.

The visit marks a significant step towards closer cooperation between India and the Maldives, as both countries work towards mutual progress and prosperity in the region.
