Lebanese MPs urge immediate ceasefire with Israel

Lebanon’s opposition MPs are sounding the alarm as Israel’s bombardment of the country escalates, calling for immediate action to prevent further conflict. Representatives from the Lebanese Kataeb Party and Lebanese Forces presented a united front, advocating for a ceasefire and the implementation of UN Resolution 1701 to restore peace.

The opposition is pushing for state control over decisions of war and peace, emphasizing the need for all weapons to be under state authority, particularly referencing Hezbollah. They also stressed the urgency of electing a president to uphold Lebanon’s constitution and sovereignty, supporting the formation of a government focused on constitutional enforcement and economic recovery.

Amidst political divisions, Lebanese Army Commander Joseph Aoun is emerging as a potential consensus candidate for the presidency, with international support backing this development. Discussions among foreign powers about Lebanon’s future are ongoing, with the opposition advocating for the disarmament of Hezbollah with international backing.
