The Organised Labour Calls for Audit of LG Workers and Retirees

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Nigeria Union of Teachers, and Nigerian Union of Pensioners have joined forces to propose a comprehensive audit of local government workers, primary school teachers, and pensioners across the 774 local government areas in Nigeria. This audit is aimed at ensuring transparency and accuracy in the numbers of employees and retirees.

In addition, the Joint Action Committee of local government-based unions has recommended a one-year embargo on new staff recruitment, including teachers, to promote stability and effective governance following the recent Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments.

The recommendations also include restructuring supervisory institutions, intervention by the Federal Government in infrastructure procurement, and the establishment of specific funds for workers’ welfare and industrial harmony.

These proposals are crucial for the enhancement of service delivery, policy formulation, and overall efficiency within the local government system. The Organised Labour encourages a collaborative approach to address the challenges faced by local governments and ensure sustainable development.
