The recent Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah’s south Beirut stronghold have caused more than 400,000 people to flee the region, according to Lebanese official media. With over 300,000 Syrians and 102,000 Lebanese seeking refuge in neighboring Syria, the situation has escalated rapidly.
Amidst the chaos, Hezbollah has called upon its fighters to refrain from attacking Israeli troops near a UN peacekeeping position, citing concerns for the safety of peacekeepers in the area. The group accused Israel of using UNIFIL forces as human shields.
Despite UNIFIL’s warnings and Israeli requests for relocation, they remain in their positions near the border. Israel has also announced limited ground incursions into south Lebanon, leading to clashes with Hezbollah fighters.
With over 1,110 people killed and many displaced, the conflict underscores the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The situation violates UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which mandates the deployment of only Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon.
