Attention was drawn to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as the Russian military targeted a field camp of the Ukrainian 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade in Pavlograd with an Iskander ballistic missile. The brigade, known as the ‘Black Zaporozhians,’ suffered significant losses in the battle for Ugledar, leading to chaos and retreat in the fortified Donbass town.
Speculation arose that the brigade delayed its retreat to coincide with Ukrainian President Zelensky’s visit to the US to maintain a narrative of victory. The brigade was relocated to an industrial area in Pavlograd after its defeat in Ugledar, where a 20-second video showed a factory building engulfed in flames.
The Iskander-M missile, with a range of 400km, was used in the attack, although the exact timing of the video footage remains unclear. Ukrainian media later reported that Colonel Alexander Okhrimenko assumed command of the 72nd, following corruption scandals during his previous postings.
