Iraq’s wheat reserves exceed 5.5M tons

Exciting news from Baghdad! Iraq’s strategic reserves of wheat have surpassed 5.5 million tons, ensuring that the country is well-prepared to meet local demand for at least one year. Haider Nouri, Director of the General Company for Grain Trade, confirmed this significant achievement, highlighting that flour prices will remain stable even amidst global crises.

In a move toward self-sufficiency, Iraq’s state company recently reported the purchase of 6.3 million tons of locally produced wheat, a record-breaking amount. The Minister of Trade, Atheer Al-Ghurairy, proudly declared earlier this year that Iraq no longer needs to import wheat to maintain its strategic stocks, as the country’s production has surged.

This impressive yield is a result of innovative agricultural practices, such as cultivating wheat in desert areas using groundwater. Despite facing challenges like water scarcity and desertification, Iraq has managed to significantly increase its wheat production, demonstrating resilience and adaptability.

With a population of 43 million people, Iraq requires between 4.5 million and 5 million tons of wheat annually. The country’s success in achieving self-sufficiency marks a positive turning point in its agricultural sector, promising a secure food supply for its citizens.
