India, Maldives enhance ties with economic and maritime security partnership

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu recently met to further strengthen the relationship between their countries on various fronts. The discussions included topics such as development partnership, energy, trade, financial linkages, and defense cooperation, resulting in the formalization of the India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership.

President Muizzu expressed commitment to maintaining strong ties and described the Maldives as a true friend to India, sharing a vision of peace and development in the region. Modi reaffirmed India’s support for the Maldives, highlighting India’s role as the First Responder for the island nation in times of need.

The two leaders signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during the visit, including a currency swap agreement and discussions on a potential free trade agreement in the future. This visit underscores the importance New Delhi places on its relationship with the Maldives and is expected to boost cooperation and strengthen people-to-people ties.
