Hurricane Milton strengthens, prompts storm surge warnings for Florida’s Gulf Coast

The Mexican government has issued a hurricane warning for the Yucatan Peninsula coast from Celestun to Rio Lagartos. Gov. Ron DeSantis announced preparations for Hurricane Milton’s potential arrival in Hillsborough or Pinellas county on Wednesday evening. Emergency declarations have been issued for 51 counties with around-the-clock debris clearing operations in progress to reduce flying object threats. Evacuations are set to begin today in areas like Anna Maria and Pinellas County, emphasizing the importance of having a plan and leaving without waiting for an order.

Polk County has listed available shelters, including pet-friendly options, while various schools and colleges have announced closures. Milton’s unique track from the Gulf’s Bay of Campeche towards Florida’s west is a rare occurrence, with only two storms following a similar path since 1850. Hurricane Helene’s recent impact on Florida’s Big Bend region resulted in tragic consequences, highlighting the urgency for preparedness and safety measures.
