Fighting in Lebanon and Gaza: What to know – Naharnet

Israel launched a new air and ground offensive in northern Gaza and intensified its campaign in Beirut, targeting Hezbollah and Hamas militants. The strikes have resulted in significant casualties, with over 1,200 people killed in Gaza and nearly 2,000 in Lebanon.

As tensions escalate, Israel has vowed to retaliate against Iran, which supports Hamas and Hezbollah. The conflict has also led to a major displacement crisis, with 1.2 million people forced from their homes in Lebanon.

Amidst the anniversary of last October’s attack, protests and memorial events are taking place worldwide. Relations between Israel and key allies such as the U.S. and France remain strained, with calls for an arms embargo on Israel from French President Emmanuel Macron.

Vice President Kamala Harris reiterated the U.S.’ commitment to providing military aid to Israel while urging for an end to the ongoing violence. The situation in the region remains volatile, with both sides facing mounting pressure to seek a diplomatic solution.
