EU urges Juba to ensure affordable citizen registration

The European Union is calling on South Sudan to ensure that the acquisition of nationality is affordable for all citizens. The EU Deputy Head of Delegation emphasized the importance of nationality documentation during a training session in Juba. Statelessness is a global issue that affects human rights, highlighting the need for easy access to nationality documentation.

The EU is committed to promoting human rights and believes that the right to nationality is a fundamental aspect of a person’s identity. The training in South Sudan is a significant step towards a peaceful, democratic state that respects human rights. It aims to address challenges faced by returnees and internally displaced persons in obtaining civil documentation.

The EU envoy urged South Sudan to make civil documentation accessible to all citizens and fulfill pledges made for the Global Refugee Forum. Collaboration among states and partners can ensure that vulnerable groups are legally recognized and documented. The training, organized by UNHCR and funded by the EU, aims to document 15,000 individuals and build capacity in various regions of South Sudan.
