Constructive critique of courts essential

In a recent ceremony marking the opening of the new legal year, Chief Justice Mr. Justice Donal O’Donnell emphasized the importance of fair and constructive criticism of the courts and judges. He highlighted the limitations on information available about court cases and the constraints on courts and judges. The event, only the second of its kind in 100 years at the Four Courts building in Ireland, aimed to illustrate the essential equality of every person irrespective of beliefs.

Mr. Justice O’Donnell discussed the impact of media and social media on public perception of the legal system, stressing the need for greater public understanding to build confidence. He warned of the challenges facing the system of government and the role of the courts in maintaining checks and balances.

Addressing the need for modernization, he called for significant investment in court infrastructure and digital services. He highlighted the correlation between resources and increased judicial output, advocating for a reevaluation of the justice system model. With the pace of societal change accelerating, he emphasized the importance of adapting the legal system to meet the demands of modern-day business activities.
