The Brazilian government is pushing to reinstate visa-free travel to Mexico for its citizens after Mexico began requiring physical visas from Brazilians in 2022. The change was prompted by pressure from the United States, but Brazil sees an opportunity to renegotiate with Mexico’s new president.
Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has discussed this issue with Mexican officials, with talks continuing with the new Secretary of Foreign Relations. Both countries believe a visa exemption agreement would boost tourism and business travel, with negotiations set to advance at the G20 summit in November.
Despite President Lula’s invitation, Sheinbaum has yet to confirm her attendance at the upcoming meeting due to scheduling conflicts. Brazilian citizens have faced increasing visa denials and strict requirements when traveling to Mexico, leading to discussions of reinstating the previous visa-free arrangement.
Currently, Mexico waives visa requirements for Brazilians holding visas from select countries and allows cruise ship passengers a seven-day visa-free stay. However, other Brazilian travelers must apply for a visa, meeting specific financial criteria.
Both Brazil and Mexico aim to find a mutually beneficial solution to restore smoother travel between the two nations.
