Embattled former Philippine mayor Alice Guo, who is facing charges related to illegal offshore gambling and has been accused of being a Chinese spy, is gearing up to run for office again. This move has sparked concerns about national security and gaps in election laws.
Guo’s lawyer, Stephen David, stated that she plans to submit her candidacy on the final day of the candidate filing period for the upcoming midterm elections. Despite the pending court rulings on her cases, Guo aims to run for mayor of Bamban town in Tarlac province to express her dedication to the people, dismissing disqualification attempts as mere technicalities.
David emphasized that the decision should ultimately lie with the voters, highlighting that Guo’s disqualification is not definitive. Guo was previously ousted from public office for alleged misconduct linked to an offshore gaming operator involved in illicit activities.
