A tragic incident has struck central Zambia as at least 10 individuals have lost their lives and an unknown number are still missing following a mine collapse. The collapse took place in Mumbwa, approximately 150 kilometers west of Lusaka, with rescue operations currently in progress to assist the miners trapped underground. With nine bodies already recovered from the site and one person passing away in the hospital, the situation remains dire.
Collins Nzovu, a local government representative, mentioned that 20 miners are feared dead, although this number has not been officially confirmed by the authorities. The victims are believed to be informal miners, a common practice in Zambia, where individuals work independently in mining activities.
This unfortunate incident is reminiscent of a similar tragedy last year when dozens of informal miners perished in landslides at an open-pit copper mine in Chingola. The dangers faced by these individuals highlight the urgent need for better safety measures and regulations in the mining sector.
