UN worried about IDF tanks near Irish post.

Newly obtained imagery by RTÉ has revealed nearly 20 pieces of Israeli military equipment positioned near an Irish-manned UN post in southern Lebanon. The Irish Defence Forces have expressed concerns over the close proximity, especially with ongoing fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in the region.

The United Nations, both through military channels and diplomatic channels, has addressed Israel regarding the firing position and requested a cessation of firing from that location to ensure the safety of peacekeepers in the area.

Despite the tensions, Irish troops have remained professional and courageous, continuing to fulfill their duties amidst the heightened military activity. President Michael D Higgins condemned the threats made by the Israeli Defence Forces against the peacekeeping force, emphasizing the importance of their safety.

As part of the multinational UN peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL, Irish troops have been stationed in Lebanon for decades to monitor hostilities and support the Lebanese army in maintaining peace. The presence of Israeli military equipment near UN posts has raised concerns about the safety of peacekeepers in the region.

Overall, the situation highlights the delicate balance and challenges faced by peacekeeping missions in conflict zones, as they work to ensure safety and peace amidst ongoing tensions and military activities.
