Exploring the Religious Divide in Ukraine
In July 2023, I embarked on a pilgrimage to the Pochaiv Monastery in western Ukraine, a significant Orthodox site steeped in history. While traveling, I encountered diverse perspectives on religious identity and the ongoing tensions between various factions. The monastery, currently affiliated with the Moscow Patriarchate, faces uncertainty due to recent political decisions that aim to sever ties with Russian-linked religious groups.
Amidst the backdrop of President Putin’s war and the country’s quest for autonomy, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine emerged as a symbol of independence and a breakaway from Moscow’s influence. The struggle for spiritual sovereignty is intertwined with geopolitical complexities, leading to fractures within communities and hierarchies.
