In a recent speech, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te emphasized the historical roots of Taiwan’s independence from mainland China, rejecting the idea of China becoming its “motherland.” As tensions between the two countries escalate, with Beijing conducting military drills near Taiwan, Lai warned of the economic impact a conflict in the Taiwan Strait could have globally.
The People’s Republic of China governs mainland China, while the Republic of China administers Taiwan. Lai highlighted that China marked its 75th anniversary on October 1st, while Taiwan will celebrate its 113th birthday shortly after. Despite China’s claims that Taiwan is its territory, the democratically-elected government of Taiwan asserts that only the island’s people can determine its future.
As Lai continues to advocate for Taiwan’s sovereignty and independence, the US, Taiwan’s closest ally, has also raised concerns about China’s intentions and warned of potential economic and cyber warfare tactics to coerce Taiwan’s surrender. While the Chinese premier reiterated Taiwan’s status as its territory, China has yet to respond to Lai’s statements.
