Rwanda Begins Vaccination Campaign Against Marburg Virus Outbreak
Rwanda has launched a vaccination campaign against the Marburg virus following the deaths of 12 people in the country. Health Minister Sabin Nsanzimana announced the initiative, targeting those “most at risk” and healthcare workers exposed to the virus.
The outbreak, similar to Ebola, has caused concern since its declaration on September 27. With 46 confirmed cases, the government is taking proactive measures to contain the spread by vaccinating individuals in close contact with infected patients.
Marburg, transmitted by fruit bats, has no authorised vaccine or treatment, making prevention crucial. Symptoms include fever, muscle pains, and severe bleeding, leading to a high fatality rate among those infected.
Rwanda’s swift response to the outbreak highlights the importance of early intervention in combating infectious diseases. With shipments of vaccines received from international partners, the country aims to protect its population from further harm.
