Chaos and Controversy Surround Rivers State Local Government Elections
Despite numerous challenges, local government elections were held in Rivers State amidst gunshots, bomb explosions, and protests. Concerns were raised about the minimal police presence, leading to worries among residents.
The turnout for the elections across 23 LGAs in Rivers State was substantial, with the exercise starting early in many areas. The absence of police security was due to a court order restraining them from providing support during the polls. Tensions rose as Governor Fubara and Minister Wike clashed over the election process.
Protests and Violence
Protests against the elections were staged in Port Harcourt, with Wike’s supporters rallying against the exercise. However, voting commenced in various LGAs despite the opposition. Violent incidents, including shootings in Igwuruta and explosions at party secretariats, added to the turmoil surrounding the elections.
Police Response and Results
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed explosions at APC Secretariat and Obio/Akpor LGA Secretariat, initiating investigations. Despite the chaos, RSIEC declared APP as the winner of 22 out of 23 LGA chairmanship seats, highlighting the controversial outcome of the elections.
