“As long as children are being murdered by the apartheid regime in Israel, we have unfinished business.”
The South African government is being urged to boycott, divest, and sanction Israel as protesters in Cape Town demand action against the ongoing violence in Gaza.
Organizers of a mass protest presented a memorandum calling for the enactment of the Apartheid Convention Bill, which would make BDS against Israel mandatory in South Africa.
The bill also aims to prosecute those supporting apartheid globally, emphasizing the importance of solidarity with Palestine.
Anti-apartheid activist Reverend Allan Boesak highlighted the need for legal measures to support boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against Israel, emphasizing the unresolved business in the fight for justice.
In an interview, a Parliament representative acknowledged concerns about the government’s pace in pressuring Israel and assured a review of the protesters’ demands.
Criticism of Government
The protest also criticized South Africa’s coal exports to Israel, advocating for international action against Israel’s atrocities. The diverse support for the movement highlights the unity in the fight for Palestinian rights and freedom.
