National Alliance leader clarifies reason for poll postponement

The leader of the National Alliance and Third Deputy Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), Kornelio Kon Ngu, cited the lack of infrastructure as the reason for the postponement of the December General Election. In a press conference in Juba, Ngu expressed optimism for the elections to be held in 2026, thanking the South Sudanese people for their support in the decision to delay the polls.

Ngu urged the citizens to give the leaders a chance to achieve peace and emphasized the importance of trust between political parties and citizens for a credible vote in 2026. The South Sudanese government’s decision to postpone the election until December 2026 was met with disappointment by a group of Western countries, who criticized the delay as a failure to implement the peace deal signed in 2018.

The December 2024 vote was expected to shape the future of South Sudan, a country still facing challenges in peace-building and governance. Ngu reassured the public of the government’s commitment to holding the elections in 2026 and working towards a new government in 2027.
