Lithuania has taken a bold step by filing a case against the Belarusian regime led by Alexander Lukashenko in the International Criminal Court for committing crimes against humanity. The opposition’s National Anti-Crisis Management team played a significant role in preparing this request. In a recent interview with Kyiv Post, opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya discussed Lukashenko’s manipulative tactics with the West, the plight of Belarusians, and the vision for a democratic Belarus.
Despite releasing some political prisoners, Lukashenko is attempting to mend diplomatic ties with Lithuania and engage in “constructive cooperation” – a familiar ploy to deceive the West. Tsikhanouskaya emphasized the need for the democratic world to hold Lukashenko accountable for the ongoing repression and human rights violations. She also highlighted the importance of international support in demanding justice for Belarusians who have faced atrocities under the regime.
Looking ahead to the upcoming elections in Belarus, Tsikhanouskaya stressed the need for a united front among democratic forces to challenge Lukashenko’s authoritarian rule. The ultimate goal remains a peaceful transition of power through free and fair elections, bolstered by political and economic isolation of the regime. As the fight for freedom in Belarus continues, Tsikhanouskaya’s unwavering determination underscores the high price that comes with pursuing democracy and justice.
