Hong Kong experienced a surge in mainland Chinese visitors during the National Day “golden week” break, with nearly 1 million arrivals in the first five days, marking a 35% increase from the previous year. Director of Immigration Benson Kwok Joon-fung predicts a total of 300 million arrival and departure trips by the end of 2024, returning to pre-pandemic levels.
The mainland’s golden week holiday, from October 1 to 7, attracted a significant number of tourists to Hong Kong. Kwok reported 980,000 mainland visitors entering the city, attributing the increase to attractive celebratory events and the city’s welcoming atmosphere. On National Day alone, over 220,000 travelers visited Hong Kong, showing a 30% annual rise.
Despite the bustling crowds at border checkpoints and tourist spots, Kwok emphasized the positive influx of visitors and the city’s appeal to mainland tourists. With exciting events and attractions, Hong Kong remains a popular destination for travelers.
