China makes major advance in silicon photonics, overcoming technical barrier

A state-funded semiconductor lab in China, JFS Laboratory, has made a significant breakthrough in silicon photonics. This development could help China overcome technical barriers in chip design and achieve self-sufficiency amidst US sanctions.

Based in Wuhan, JFS successfully integrated a laser light source with a silicon-based chip for the first time in China. This achievement fills a crucial gap in China’s optoelectronics technology, as reported by the state media People’s Daily.

Silicon photonics, which uses optical signals for transmission, aims to overcome the limitations of current technology. With the transmission of electric signals between chips reaching its physical limit, this breakthrough opens doors for improved chip performance.

Established in 2021 with significant government funding, JFS is at the forefront of pursuing technological advancements in the semiconductor industry. Major global players are also investing in silicon photonics for future chip enhancements in data processing and artificial intelligence.
