Tunisian diaspora longs to return as repression under Saied grows

Amidst the Tunisian diaspora, the desire to return home is strong but the oppressive policies of President Kais Saied are preventing many from doing so. Exiles like Kaouther Ferjani, daughter of a political prisoner, fear arrest upon return and view upcoming elections with skepticism.

The recent presidential election saw Saied running against two other candidates, neither of whom gained Ferjani’s support. Many in the diaspora believe the electoral process is rigged, perpetuating Saied’s rule. Despite this, some, like former MP Majdi Karbai, advocate for voting as a means to prevent manipulation.

Opposition to Saied is on the rise, with many backing outsider candidate Ayachi Zammel in defiance of Saied’s perceived injustice. Inspired by Zammel’s promise to overturn Saied’s authoritarian rule, the diaspora’s support for him is strong.

The threat of continued oppression and protests looms large, as more Tunisians flee the country in search of freedom. The tragic exodus has already led to numerous deaths at sea, underscoring the urgency for change in Tunisia.
