Support for Palestine, Lebanon shown in Cape Town, Joburg rallies.

In a show of solidarity with the people of Palestine, the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) joined a march in Cape Town, calling on the South African government to sever ties with Israel’s government. Cosatu urged for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and for the Israeli government to vacate Lebanon and Palestine.

The ongoing violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict intensified after an October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people, predominantly civilians. Israeli forces responded with an assault on the Gaza Strip, leading to the deaths of over 40,000 Palestinians and the displacement of almost the entire population of 2.3 million.

This call for action comes amidst escalating tensions in the region, with Cosatu advocating for peace and condemning the violence inflicted on innocent civilians. The global community continues to monitor the situation closely, hoping for a resolution that brings an end to the suffering of those affected.
