Ukraine’s potential NATO membership despite ongoing Russian occupation is a topic of discussion. Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg mentioned in an interview that there could be ways around NATO’s Article 5 clause in the case of Ukraine, where the internationally recognized border might not align with NATO’s territory.
Currently, Russia controls around 27% of Ukrainian territory, including regions like Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Crimea. Stoltenberg highlighted historical examples to illustrate potential compromises or security guarantees for Ukraine’s protection.
Although Ukraine applied for NATO membership in 2022, it is yet to receive a formal invitation. However, there are speculations that the status of Ukraine’s NATO membership bid could advance before U.S. President Joe Biden leaves office in January.
