The Centre on Thursday approved the conferral of ‘Classical Language’ status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Marathi while addressing an event in Mumbai. He emphasized the importance of the classical language status for Marathi, mentioning the profound historical and literary significance. PM Modi urged Marathi speakers to promote the language globally for educational and research opportunities.
Emphasizing linguistic inclusivity, the Prime Minister discussed leveraging technology for language translations to reach a wider audience. He assured support for education in mother tongues, including medical and engineering studies in Marathi as per the National Education Policy.
Moreover, PM Modi highlighted the government’s commitment to preserving linguistic diversity by incorporating mother tongues in court judgments. The conferral of classical language status to Marathi and Pali was met with gratitude by various groups.
The decision to confer classical status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali will expand the total languages with this status to eleven, providing benefits for their promotion and recognition on an international level.
