Pakistan police clash with ex-PM Khan’s supporters

In a dramatic showdown in Pakistan’s capital, police clashed with supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan during an anti-government rally, defying a ban on congregating. Despite the city being on high alert and numerous roadblocks in place, Khan’s supporters managed to evade authorities, calling for his release and protesting against the ruling coalition.

With high-level diplomatic events scheduled, including a visit from the Indian foreign minister, tensions escalated as authorities fired tear gas to disperse protesters. The government enlisted the army’s help to provide security for the upcoming events, urging Khan’s supporters to delay protests until after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting.

Despite being in jail, Khan’s influence remains strong, as candidates supported by him won the most seats in previous elections. The ongoing political turmoil has led to a power struggle between Khan’s supporters and the current coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
