The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted air raids on Beirut, leading to a massive explosion in the Lebanese capital. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to escalate the fight against Hezbollah, who have been attacking northern Israel with rockets and mortar shells.
Al Jazeera correspondent Laura Khan described the explosion as “absolutely massive,” with videos on social media capturing the bright blaze and powerful blast. The Israeli army stated that they were targeting Hezbollah in Beirut.
The IDF’s intensified bombing and ground raids aim to secure northern Israel for the return of 70,000 residents who fled Hezbollah attacks. Lebanon has suffered over 2,000 casualties and 1.2 million displacements since Operation Northern Arrows began on September 23.
