Malaysia’s PAS consolidates power with ‘brilliant’ move

Four Malaysian States Form Joint Company to Pool Resources

Four Malaysian states – Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, and Terengganu – have joined forces to establish a company, SG4 Group Sdn Bhd, aiming to share wealth and resources equitably. Led by the federal opposition coalition Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), this initiative seeks to consolidate political power and attract investments.

With each state holding a 25% stake in the company, the focus will be on key clusters such as infrastructure, trade, agriculture, education, and new revenue sources. This collaboration is unique, representing the first of its kind amongst Malaysian states.

Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed, the company’s adviser, highlighted the states’ diverse resources, from rare earth elements to agricultural land and oil reserves. This innovative approach to pooling resources sets a new precedent in Malaysian politics.

While individual states have previously established economic development corporations, this multi-state venture represents a bold step towards regional cooperation. Whether this strategic move will yield the desired investments remains to be seen.
